Most teenagers can tell you what a recession is, especially now since we’ve been going through one for the last few years. They probably could also tell you about how their family is affected and maybe even what caused it.

But some people are affected by the recession more than others. Some kids’ parents are part of the 15 million Americans or 10 percent of the country’s workforce that are unemployed. I am one of those teenagers who is part of a family that went from financially stable to just trying to make ends meet.

Recently, I saw a statistic that said about 1 million teens get pregnant each year in the United States. Something that 50 years ago would have been strongly frowned upon and dishonorable has turned into something that is, “not that big of a deal.” It seems like every year there are more girls getting pregnant and making life that much harder on themselves. I might be old fashioned to think that you can have a relationship without sex but, is having sex really worth the risk?

The start of school excites some teens and depresses others. Either way, you need to be prepared.

The hustle and bustle is revving up as the race to get the best school supplies begins. It is even more of a hassle for college students who have to buy not only supplies, but books as well.

While some students relax, others get credit

Summer is usually a time for relaxing and having fun, not going to school.

High school students in the Fort Zumwalt district have the option to take summer credit classes, including gym. One reason to take gym during the summer is to get it over and done with so you can use your time during the regular school year to take classes not offered in the summer.

Hannah Seibert, an incoming freshman at Fort Zumwalt West, said her favorite part of taking this course is getting to see her friends. Jackie Riggs, another incoming freshman at West, said the best part is that it keeps you in shape.
