Take an 18-year-old Francis Howell High School student, who is a conservative Hwy. K and N protester; add the liberal documentary “Sicko” by Michael Moore; stir in a lapse in procedure and an apparent “political slur” and it all combines to create an explosion of political controversy, which newspapers, bloggers, radio stations and even a five o’clock news channel showcased.

When I compare myself to the average teenager, I see a few major differences. One of those differences is the consumption of alcohol. I enjoy reading the newspaper, but I always skip over the obituaries. It makes me sad. Not that these people died, but that their lives can be summed up in less than 50 words. All the things we do – the jobs we have, the people we meet, the knowledge we gain and the money we make – do any of these have lasting significance?

Driving down Highway K and the car is running low on gas. Try to pull into Mobile but the way is blocked by people with poster boards and signs. Their signs say things like ‘No Socialism” and “NObama”. They try to get people to honk their horns and join the protest. While a distraction and a nuisance to some, this group is there every Saturday protecting their paycheck and beliefs on government as well as their thoughts on universal health care.

The signs that the protesters hold refer to President Obama’s plan to socialize health care. This local protest is organized by a retired Francis Howell High School employee, Janet Allquist. The protest began in April and continues every Saturday from 1-2 p.m. Allquist is one of the many Americans who doesn’t like Obama’s health care reform plan.
