Most teenagers can tell you what a recession is, especially now since we’ve been going through one for the last few years. They probably could also tell you about how their family is affected and maybe even what caused it.

But some people are affected by the recession more than others. Some kids’ parents are part of the 15 million Americans or 10 percent of the country’s workforce that are unemployed. I am one of those teenagers who is part of a family that went from financially stable to just trying to make ends meet.

At the beginning of their senior year, local high school students have an opportunity to attend only a half day of school. While other students remain in class, these students are allowed to leave and attend college or work a job.

Driving down Highway K and the car is running low on gas. Try to pull into Mobile but the way is blocked by people with poster boards and signs. Their signs say things like ‘No Socialism” and “NObama”. They try to get people to honk their horns and join the protest. While a distraction and a nuisance to some, this group is there every Saturday protecting their paycheck and beliefs on government as well as their thoughts on universal health care.

The signs that the protesters hold refer to President Obama’s plan to socialize health care. This local protest is organized by a retired Francis Howell High School employee, Janet Allquist. The protest began in April and continues every Saturday from 1-2 p.m. Allquist is one of the many Americans who doesn’t like Obama’s health care reform plan.

Francis Howell High School students are learning to deal with the disruption

Building a $70 million high school is no small task. Francis Howell High School students are bound to be inconvenienced during the next two years, attending classes while construction replaces most of their campus.

“Our school activities have been affected tremendously by the construction,” said Principal Chris Greiner. “The marching band, P.E. classes, football, soccer and tennis teams have all been displaced because of it.”
